The President should push for reforms regarding the removal of children from adult jails and criminal courts. Once children enter the adult criminal justice system they suffer from a lack of educational resources, inadequate medical and mental health treatment, and are an increased rick of victimization, physical and sexual assault, and suicide. Thoughtful placement of children in the least restrictive environment is a more appropriate formula for helping children grow to become healthy and productive adults. Additionally, for the health of our children, their families and public safety, all children should begin with a presumption against the adult criminal justice system. The President would be a powerful advocate for these efforts.
